A Northern Territory teenager has been attacked by a shark while spearfishing off the coast, just hours after a NSW man was attacked while learning to surf South of Wollongong.
The 17-year-old was about 30km offshore from Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land on Sunday morning when he was bitten on his arm and leg , NT police said. Paramedics who reached his vessel with police treated him before transporting him to a hospital in Gove. Later the boy was airlifted to Royal Darwin hospital suffering “deep lacerations”, a Careflight spokesman said. ABC reported authorities believe the teenager was bitten by a reef shark.
Sunday’s attack comes after a man in New South Wales was airlifted to a trauma center after a shark bit him at a beach south of Wollongong on Saturday. The Sydney man was attacked Saturday at Seven Mile beach about 1pm at Gerroa while learning how to surf. The 24-year-old was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George hospital for wounds to his hand and calf. The beach remained closed Saturday while police investigated the incident with Surf Life Saving and the Department of Primary Industries personnel.
